Know that feeling of excitement and hope when things seem to be working out? That’s exactly how I felt last Friday after attending Rock the Recession 2010. Ed Domain, founder of FlyoverGeeks and co-creator of the event, shared some passes with me. Ed and his co-creator Jess Loren, founder of SocialTechPop, created the event to be interactive so that attendees would have ample time to ask questions and talk with fellow entrepreneurs. I couldn’t have asked for a better event. I walked away with some valuable nuggets of advice including:
-
challenges you may face: confidence in raising $, bringing on team before you have $, resiliency, self-doubt, time management
-
given these challenges, remember to celebrate the few big moments
-
-
success and failure are NOT black and white, but you need to define what they are for yourself
-
develop strategic partnerships, appeal to common good, establish reciprocity and mutual respect
-
sometimes actively listening and understanding are the MOST powerful tools
-
5 steps of Selling: Rapport with person, Ask questions, Pose a solution to their questions, Invite them to buy (ask for the order), Deliver (RAPID)
-
if you strive for perfection, you’ll never obtain it. Instead, be determined to make small advances towards progression
-
BIG difference between deligation and abdication. Deligation = you’re still responsible in the end. Abdication = you remove yourself completely
-
-vet your ideas and asky people why they think its a stupid idea. if you can’t counter they response, then go back and work on it or abandon it all together
-
always be prepared to pivot
-
TIP: Send out mass emails in batches to ensure you don’t have a massive onslaught of traffic on your server and accidently bring it down
- folks at incubators likely don’t have all the answers already but can find them
-
remember communication and transparency are vital
After the event, I learned that there are often several informational and networking events for entrepreneurs held at SYNC TECHNOLOGY CENTER, home of Syncubator.
